Sony Halts Production of PS VR2 to Clear Current Inventory

Sony launched the PS VR2 virtual reality headset in February 2023 with high hopes for its success. However, this did not translate into substantial actual sales numbers.

Today, a rumor claims that the company has chosen to halt production of the headset in order to clear current inventory.

It’s alleged that Sony has a very large stock of PS VR2 devices, amid declining sales that have shrunk every quarter since the headset’s release.

IDC reports that Sony shipped 595.5 thousand units in the first quarter of last year, 435.5 thousand in the second quarter, 343.6 thousand in the third quarter, and 325.2 thousand in the fourth quarter.

These, by the way, are shipments to retailers, not consumers, so actual sales figures to consumers may be lower.

Sony has reportedly manufactured over 2 million PS VR2 units so far, according to “people familiar with its plans.”

It’s clear that sales have not come close to this mark, so temporarily halting production is a logical move.

The more intriguing question is whether this signifies anything for overall market demand for reasonably priced VR headsets, especially compared to Apple’s Vision Pro (PS VR2 is priced at $550).
