Nothing recently introduced its mid-range smartphone, the Phone 2a, which showcases the company’s distinctive design language. With a redesigned camera and performance enhancements, this version stands out as one of the top contenders in the mid-range category.

Nothing returns with its “Glyph” interface, offering a fresh perspective across every aspect of the phone, from the packaging to the unique design of the SIM card tray pin, featuring a transparent and unconventional design. Additionally, the phone comes with a USB-C cable from Nothing.

The design of the Nothing Phone 2a diverges from the company’s previous releases. In this version, Nothing opted to reduce the LED backlighting on the device’s back cover, featuring only three LED strips.

The rear camera in this version has a different design compared to Nothing Phone 1 and Phone 2, with the dual camera positioned at the top center amidst the NFC modules on the back cover, resembling the eyes of the phone’s design.

The transparent design of the back cover reveals the cable at the top of the battery, while the phone itself boasts a 90-degree angle on both sides, with rounded edges and a flat-designed frame, offering a comfortable grip.

The power button is located on the right side of the frame, while the left side houses the volume control button, providing convenient one-handed control.

The bottom frame of the phone features a USB-C port, along with the speaker, microphone, and SIM card slot, while the top frame houses only the secondary microphone.

Nothing emphasizes that the phone’s middle frame is made from 100% recycled aluminum, along with other parts in the phone made from recyclable plastic or copper.

The transparent back panel is made of scratch-resistant plastic, although the durability of these details will be evident with prolonged use.

Moreover, the Phone 2a boasts a distinctive design with slim bezels around the screen, similar to the iconic screen edges of iPhones.

The front camera sits in a punch-hole in the screen, with integrated fingerprint sensor technology, showcasing the company’s attention to detail in the phone’s design.

Additionally, the phone’s screen supports 10-bit color depth and a 240Hz touch response rate, remarkable features for a mid-range release.

The screen also supports a brightness of 1300 nits, making it ideal for displaying content with clarity even in bright daylight or well-lit outdoor settings. Moreover, the screen reproduces 1.07 billion colors with stunning accuracy.

The Phone 2a features a dual-camera setup on the rear, including a 50-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.88 aperture. The camera supports optical stabilization, with the second sensor also sporting a 50-megapixel resolution with ultra-wide viewing angles of 114 degrees. The Nothing Phone 2 features a 32-megapixel selfie camera.

Nothing enhances the photography experience in this version with a user-friendly camera app, allowing smooth navigation through various shooting modes. Users can choose from modes like slow-motion, time-lapse, Pano, Portrait, night mode, motion detection, and professional mode for photography. The phone also includes a dedicated button to activate Google Lens alongside the shutter button.

In practical use, the primary camera performs excellently in bright lighting conditions during daylight hours. However, the performance is not optimal with HDR technology, and the ultra-wide camera excels in exposure under extreme lighting conditions.

In low-light conditions, the phone’s camera delivers very good performance with clear details, especially with the primary sensor, and also with the ultra-wide camera.

The camera settings do not include telephoto lenses; however, the phone offers up to 2x zoom with good performance. The ‘Portrait’ mode also provides good cropping of photos up to one or two times.

On the other hand, the selfie camera in the Phone 2a captures clear details in daylight but loses some detail in low-light conditions.

Additionally, the phone offers very good video recording performance with precise details and clear colors, along with dynamic range in different lighting conditions. The primary camera supports 4K video recording at 30 frames per second or 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second, along with slow-motion video recording at 1080p resolution at 120 frames per second.
