Intel has launched its updated 14th Gen processors to compete with AMD Ryzen 7 releases. In the following lines, we will shed light on the Intel Core i9-14900K processor specifically to discuss the positives and negatives of this limited update from Intel’s processors.

Review of Intel Core i9-14900K Processor from the 14th Gen Raptor Lake

The Intel Core i9-14900K processor from the updated 14th Gen Raptor Lake processors is based on Intel 7 lithography. This version is developed to support workstation setups for desktop computers and features:

  • 24 cores divided into 8 performance-focused cores and 16 efficiency-focused cores, with a total of 32 threads.
  • The processor can reach a Max Turbo frequency of 6 GHz and supports Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology at 5.8 GHz.
  • Performance cores (P cores) can reach a maximum Turbo performance of 5.6 GHz.
  • Efficiency cores (E cores) can reach a maximum Turbo performance of 4.4 GHz.
  • The chip’s primary performance is at 3.2 GHz, and its primary efficiency is at 2.4 GHz.
  • The chip includes 36 MB of Intel Smart Cache.
  • It also has a total of 32 MB of L2 cache.
  • The processor has a power rating of 125 W with a maximum power capacity of 253 W.

It supports up to 192 GB of memory and can handle memory types up to DDR5 5600 MT/s or DDR4 3200 MHz, with support for dual-channel memory.

AMD has dominated the gaming market with its AMD Ryzen 7 series processors, known for their 3D V-Cache. Today, Intel attempts to compete with AMD releases, with the Intel Core i9-14900K being Intel’s highest offering yet, boasting a frequency of up to 6 GHz with overclocking. Despite retaining the same core count as previous generations, Intel has made adjustments in frequencies.

The P cores offer maximum turbo performance at 5.6 GHz, while the E cores provide maximum turbo performance at 4.4 GHz. The main frequencies in P and E cores have also been increased by 200 MHz. With these minor changes, we can’t expect a drastic change in gaming performance or creative tasks. Additionally, the chip doesn’t surpass the outstanding performance of AMD’s X3D chips.

The chip is compatible with Z690 and Z790 motherboards that support Intel’s 14th Gen processors efficiently. You will need to install a BIOS update on your motherboard, a smooth process on newer motherboards. The chip has been tested with the enhanced MAG Z790 Carbon WiFi motherboard, supporting Wi-Fi 7 and the necessary specifications for testing the Intel Core i9-14900K processor’s performance.

As indicated in the specifications, the 14900K processor is based on Intel 7 manufacturing and features a hybrid x86 performance architecture. The P cores enhance performance, while the E cores improve efficiency. The “Thread Director” software supports load balancing across cores for better CPU control.

Although the core count hasn’t changed, the chip now supports DDR5 5600 and DDR4 3200 memory speeds. With AMD transitioning to AM5, Intel’s chips remain compatible with DDR4 for motherboard manufacturers offering DDR4 support.

In various workload tests and gaming scenarios, the Core i9-14900K outperforms the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and 7950X3D in all creative tasks. However, the improvement over the previous Intel generation isn’t significant enough to warrant an upgrade, especially if you’re currently using a 12th Gen processor. Still, the Core i9-14900K is a solid choice for creative tasks.

In a 4K video content export test using Adobe Premiere Pro 2023, the Core i9-14900K took 2 minutes and 31 seconds, a slight improvement over the previous 13900K. However, thermal and power consumption levels remain similar to the 13900K, indicating limited efficiency gains.

In gaming tests, Intel’s Core i9-14900K didn’t surpass AMD’s 7800X3D overall, indicating no significant performance change compared to its predecessor or superiority over AMD’s offerings, particularly with AMD’s 3D V-Cache feature.

Despite limited gains in performance, the Core i9-14900K doesn’t bring efficiency or temperature reductions. Thermal tests show similar temperatures to the 13900K. In terms of power consumption, the 14900K consumes significantly more power than the 7950X3D, indicating a 9% performance improvement at a 120% power consumption increase.

Overall, while the Intel Core i9-14900K offers improvements, they are incremental and may not justify an upgrade for all users, especially those with recent Intel or AMD processors meeting their needs effectively.

The 7800X3D and 7950X3D chips consume less power with better cooling when running games compared to the Intel 14900K processor. Therefore, it’s difficult to recommend the 14900K chip to users this year, especially for creators whose work relies on spending long hours on tasks. The Intel version consumes more power and performs similarly in games, with AMD’s 7800X3D offering better gaming performance at a lower price point (under $400) compared to the i9-14900K priced at $589.

Certainly, AMD’s offerings excel with their 3D V-cache memory, which hasn’t been matched by Intel’s processors so far. However, some expectations suggest that the Intel Arrow Lake series will come with competitive specifications and the radical change needed to surpass AMD.
