Qualcomm announces X80 5G modem chip and FastConnect 7900 communication system at #MWC2024

Today, chip manufacturing giant Qualcomm announced the X80 5G modem chip and the FastConnect 7900 communication system.

Qualcomm officially introduced its latest modem chip developed by the company, the X80 5G, which combines fast 5G connectivity with artificial intelligence technology.

Qualcomm emphasizes that the seventh generation of Snapdragon modem chips is a 5G AI chip, featuring a tensor accelerator that brings improvements in data speed, network coverage, and more power-efficient consumption.

The 5G AI Suite Gen 3 technology in the modem chip brings improvements in AI technology for more accurate location detection and enhanced coverage. Qualcomm states that the chip consumes 10% less power when connected to mmWave networks, with a 30% improvement in location accuracy.

The Snapdragon X80 chip is the first 5G release from Qualcomm that fully supports both non-terrestrial network (NTN) and non-terrestrial network (NB) bands to support satellite communications.

Additionally, the chip supports download speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second, with upload speeds reaching 3.5 gigabits per second, supporting both mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G frequencies.

The Snapdragon X80 chip is the first modem to feature a 6-antenna architecture and is the first modem chip with 6x downlink carrier aggregation, with mmWave frequency bands leveraging AI technology.

Qualcomm has already begun testing the Snapdragon X80 modem chip with smartphone manufacturers, with support for smartphones expected to launch in the second half of 2024.

Qualcomm also announced the new FastConnect 7900 communication technology, an integrated system that combines Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ultra Wideband communication technology in a single chip manufactured with 6-nanometer precision.

This chip supports Wi-Fi 7 technology with speeds of up to 5.8 gigabits per second, Bluetooth 5.4 technology with spatial audio, and support for ANT+ technology.

The chip also brings improvements in AI technology, reducing latency and adjusting power consumption according to usage scenarios.

Qualcomm states that the chip consumes 40% less power compared to the FastConnect 7800 chip, and the FastConnect 7900 is expected to be available in the second half of 2024.
