According to a new report, upcoming Google Pixel devices, including the Pixel 9 series, Pixel Fold 2, and the 5G-connected Pixel Tablet, will receive a new cellular modem, marking a long-awaited upgrade.

Since the major reboot of Tensor, Google has shifted away from Qualcomm modem devices paired with Snapdragon processors to Samsung modem devices that work with the Tensor-reliant Exynos base.

Google first upgraded the Tensor-paired modem in the Pixel 7 series but relied on the same modem (albeit a slightly newer update) in the Pixel 8 series.

Although the modem is reasonably adequate, it still struggles in low-connectivity areas and is less power-efficient.

Now, it seems Google plans to equip the Pixel 9 and other devices with an updated modem. Reports from Android Authority suggest that the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro “XL” will be equipped with a new modem.

However, this modem, which will be part of the Tensor G4, will continue to be provided by Samsung; the new generation referred to as 5400, up from the 5300 paired with Tensor G3.

The same modem will be used in the upcoming Pixel Fold 2 as well as the previously undisclosed Pixel Tablet connected to 5G.

In February, 9to5Google reported possible codenames for the Pixel Tablet 2, including the codename “clementine” mentioned in this report, confirming that this is indeed a follow-up to the Pixel Tablet. The current Pixel Tablet does not offer any cellular connectivity.

According to the reports, the new modem has been upgraded in terms of software, but it’s unclear how the device changes. The only clear upgrade is the support for 3GPP Rel.17 5G specifications, which support satellite connectivity.

Technically, the modem in Pixel devices also supports satellite connectivity but has not been utilized yet, using an older version of 5G specifications.

In addition to this added support, Pixel units supporting satellites will use the “Satellite Gateway” application, which will be used by the user through SOS emergencies.

According to this report, users will be prompted with basic questions to determine the emergency status, with the option to notify contacts and send messages with emergency services.
