Microsoft unveiled the new version of Windows 11, built to support Arm and AI chips in the next generation of “Copilot + AI PC” devices.

During the Build 2024 conference, Microsoft showcased the new generation of computers from its partners, branded as “Copilot + AI PC.” These devices are based on Arm chips combined with the new NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for enhanced AI processing.

This new generation of devices aims primarily to execute advanced AI tasks, integrating seamlessly with the newly enhanced Windows 11, which is designed to align with Microsoft’s vision for AI technology.

This iteration of Windows 11 features a new core, a translator, a new simulation system called “Prism,” and support for running legacy x86 and x64 applications.

The “Windows on Arm” platform has seen numerous improvements over the years, with the simulation system now optimized for devices like the Surface Pro 9 5G.

Microsoft emphasizes that Windows 11 has been re-engineered to leverage the capabilities of Arm chips for intensive AI tasks effectively.

Additionally, the new system includes a revamped computation engine model that recognizes NPUs like how Windows handles CPUs and GPUs. This version also integrates AI-specific APIs directly into the system.

This setup allows developers to more efficiently utilize Arm chips to explore AI capabilities.

Moreover, the NPUs in Copilot Plus devices with Snapdragon X Elite processors can handle over 40 trillion operations per second for AI tasks, which is four times the capacity of previous AI-enhanced devices.
