Meta has announced that it is opening up its Horizon OS system, used to operate its Oculus glasses, to external parties.

The first companies to use Horizon OS with the new glasses will be Asus and Lenovo. The Asus glasses will carry the ROG brand and target gamers, while Lenovo will develop mixed reality devices for productivity, learning, and entertainment, according to the official press release on the matter.

Meta strongly hints that these devices will use Qualcomm chips just as they did with Quest 3, although it does not directly mention it.

There will also be a limited edition of “Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox” developed in collaboration with Meta and the Xbox team. The Meta Quest store has been renamed to Meta Horizon Store to better align with the operating system’s name.

The accompanying mobile app for Meta Quest will also be renamed to Meta Horizon.

Meta Expanding Horizon OS to External Parties

Meta has also begun the process of removing barriers between the Meta Horizon Store and App Lab, allowing any developer who meets the technical requirements and core content requirements to ship software to the base system.

App Lab titles will soon be published in a dedicated section in the Horizon Store. Meta says it encourages the Google Play 2D app store to access the Horizon OS, where it can operate under the same economic model it uses on other base systems. It remains to be seen whether Google will accept this invitation.

Finally, Meta is working on developing a new framework for spatial apps to help mobile device developers create mixed-reality experiences.

With this announcement, it is clear that Meta wants Horizon OS to be tailored for AR/VR/MR glasses, much like Windows for computers and Android for smartphones.
