The ThinkPad series originally started with the ThinkPad Edge, known for its inferior build quality compared to more expensive ThinkPad models for many years. However, recent versions have seen improvements.

The E series lacks essential features needed for large enterprise customers, such as WWAN, leading to its classification in the small business segment.

Nevertheless, for many users, the E series provides a good entry into the ThinkPad world and offers one of the few reasonably priced options for a laptop equipped with TrackPoint.

Lenovo Updates Mid-Range ThinkPad Devices with Second SO-DIMM

Lenovo recently released the latest iterations in the line, the ThinkPad E14 G6 and ThinkPad E16 G2. These new additions don’t bring groundbreaking updates, as Lenovo maintains the slim design from the previous ThinkPad E14 G5 and ThinkPad E16 G1.

The new Intel versions feature an Intel Core Ultra processor with the fastest being the Core Ultra 7 155H. There will also be AMD models, although they haven’t been announced yet.

Unlike previous models, the new ThinkPad E devices feature DDR5 memory. The significant change in memory type is that the memory is no longer partially soldered: both the E14 G6 and E16 G1 now have two SO-DIMM slots supporting up to 64GB of fully upgradeable memory.

This marks Lenovo’s return to standard memory, which started with the ThinkPad T series this year. The E series also gains the new Windows Assistant key.

Since the new Intel CPU-equipped ThinkPad E14 G6 and ThinkPad E16 G2 are already in Lenovo’s PSREF specifications database, it’s likely that these new models will be available for purchase soon.
