Before the Pixel Fold’s launch in June 2023, Google had been working on foldable devices for some time. The iteration that directly preceded it has been leaked, featuring a Pixel Fold prototype with a distinctive Pixel 6-era design.

In August 2020, it was revealed that Google was developing a foldable phone called “Passport,” scheduled for a Q4 2021 release alongside the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Software evidence for this device appeared in several places, including the Android 12 Beta.

As this timeframe came and went, references to foldable devices shifted to a new name: “pipit.” It’s still being determined what exactly changed, but such mid-development codename changes have occurred before. For instance, the Pixel Slate was developed under “Meowth” when intended to run on Intel Cannon Lake processors. When those devices were delayed, Google rebuilt the Pixel Slate using older Intel processors under the name “Nocturne.”

According to Android Authority, passport, and Pipit were “different projects at one point” but eventually “converged into a single device,” with images of Pipit emerging today.

The device was posted on XDA forums but has since been removed. Only one high-resolution image of this Pixel Fold prototype remains:

Pipit appears almost identical to the first generation of the Pixel Fold, except for the camera bar that matches the Pixel 6 generation. There is a single piece of glass with metal strips at the top and bottom, extending from edge to edge in a tapered design. This presents a cleaner and more consistent look than Google’s direction.
