Originally slated for a launch in the summer of 2023, Google’s Find My Device (FMD) network has been delayed as Apple implements undisclosed tracking alerts.

It appears that the upcoming iOS 17.5 update will add this support. Apple released the first beta of iOS 17.5 today, and some individuals from 9to5Mac discovered strings detailing how iPhones will detect third-party trackers in detail.

Once found, iOS will guide users on how to disable them. For instance: “This item is not supported by Find My Network. You can disable this item and prevent it from sharing its location with the owner.”

To do this, follow the instructions provided on the website by the manufacturer of that item.

As of today’s release, this functionality hasn’t been enabled yet, and there’s no user-facing interface. It may be activated with subsequent beta releases and be ready when iOS 17.5 becomes stable.

Based on previous timelines, iOS 17.5 might be launched in May. After this update gains widespread adoption, Google’s FMD network will be free from any obstacles.

Google is waiting “until Apple implements protection measures for iOS,” preventing FMD devices from tracking iPhone owners without prior warning.

This has led to the original launch of the network being delayed to the summer of 2023, which will benefit from over a billion Android devices periodically checking nearby devices for collective location tagging of lost devices.

The new Find My Device network can “locate devices not connected to the internet or lacking location tracking capabilities.”
