Apple has unveiled a new experience at the developer conference that includes numerous features for users on the HomeKit platform with the launch of iOS 18, offering a fresh upgrade with enhancements to the Home app.

iOS 18 introduces a new Guest Access feature for HomeKit users, allowing visitors temporary control over innovative accessories without the need to add them permanently as platform members.

The new HomeKit upgrade also includes support for intelligent robotic vacuums and smart door locks, enhancing connectivity for these devices over a broader range.

Guest User in the Home App

iOS 18 Update Launches with New Features for HomeKit Platform at #WWDC24

Apple detailed that the iOS 18 beta version is already available to developers and includes the Guest User feature in the Home app, where guests can be invited via the ‘Invite People’ tab. This option allows guests specific access to smart home accessories, with preferences set by the homeowner.

Users can define guest preferences, such as timing and accessibility methods for smart devices in the home, including smart door locks, garage doors, or alarm system control.

Guests will only be able to control these devices while physically present in the home, preventing remote access to your smart home devices.

Users can also smoothly revoke guest access manually, making it an ideal feature when hosting short-term guests.

Smart Robotic Vacuums and Smart Door Locks

Apple introduces support for smart robotic vacuums in the Home app based on Matter 1.2 standards, which are set to be added later this year.

This support enables users to schedule cleaning times, switch cleaning modes, and view the vacuum’s charging status through the app. Similar to other Matter accessories in the HomeKit platform, users can control the vacuum via digital assistant Siri commands.

Several robotic vacuums supporting the Matter 1.2 interface are already available on the market, with Roborock set to offer the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra robotic vacuum soon with Matter 1.2 support.

Additionally, the update supports users in seamlessly and quickly unlocking bright doors as they approach using an Apple smartwatch or iPhone, emphasizing Apple’s commitment to security and safety standards.
