If you’ve been unable to access the Internet Archive and its Wayback Machine recently, it’s because the website has been attacked.

The nonprofit organization announced in a blog post that it is currently in its “third day of fending off an intermittent DDoS cyberattack.”

Over the Memorial Day weekend in the United States, the organization posted on X that most of its services were unavailable due to bad actors hitting its website with “tens of thousands of bogus information requests per second.”

On Tuesday morning, the organization warned that it was “still experiencing service outages” as the attackers had not stopped targeting it.

However, the website’s data appears unaffected, and you can still search for previous page content whenever you can access the site.

Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive, stated, “Fortunately, the collections are safe, but we regret that the attack has intermittently taken us offline for the past three days.”

He added, “With support from others and the hard work of staff, we are bolstering our defenses to provide more reliable access to our library. What’s new is that this attack has been ongoing, impactful, targeted, and adaptive.”

The source of the attacks has not yet been identified, but the organization mentioned that libraries and similar institutions are frequently targeted nowadays.

One such institution mentioned was the British Library, whose online information system was held ransom by hackers last year. The Internet Archive also discussed how it has been sued by the American book and recording publishing industries, accusing it of copyright infringement.
