Google recently upgraded its AI-powered note-taking assistant to Gemini 1.5 Pro, expanding its availability to over 200 countries and regions and introducing several new features.

Now, NotebookLM supports web URLs and Google slides input to generate responses to relevant queries.

The responses also include embedded quotes directly linked to relevant excerpts in the source material. Additionally, the Notebook Guide can now create high-level summaries, overviews, and FAQs.

Bringing NotebookLM to the most robust version of Gemini means users can now leverage Gemini 1.5 Pro’s multimedia capabilities to upload and cite analyzable images.

While this feature operates as expected, since NotebookLM is a “closed system,” it won’t conduct web searches or extract any information beyond aggregated sources.

NotebookLM now allows up to fifty sources, compared to just five previously. However, each source is limited to 500,000 words, meaning the AI tool can process only 25 million words per notebook.

Google shared a series of case studies on its blog highlighting various innovative uses of NotebookLM, including analyzing Walter Isaacson’s resume for Marie Curie journals, as well as audio bloggers and documentary researchers.

However, privacy concerns remain, as NotebookLM requires users to upload materials unless Google finds a way to link it to Gemini Nano, the lighter version of Gemini running on Pixel 8 Pro.

While NotebookLM remains experimental mainly, it has garnered support from a diverse community of 14,000 members comprising writers, publishers, students, and RPG enthusiasts.

With Google’s global rollout of the note-taking AI agent, the community is expected to grow further.
