Google to Discontinue Business Messaging Service in Maps and Search

Over the past few years, Google Search and Google Maps have provided a business messaging feature that allows customers to reach stores, restaurants, and more via text chat. Now, this service will be discontinued in July.

For businesses that enabled this feature, a “chat” button initially appeared in Google Search and Google Maps listings. This allowed you to chat with the company (either with a person or a bot). You could send/receive images, and there was support for read receipts.

Behind the scenes, your messages were stored using your Google account and encrypted with Google Cloud. Your email address was not shared with the businesses you messaged; only your name and profile picture (if set) were shared. This type of communication maintains the privacy of your phone number.

Google announced today that the chat feature in Google Business Profile will no longer be available as of July 31, 2024. Starting July 15, 2024, customers can no longer start new chat conversations with your business through Google. Customers engaged in current chat conversations will be notified about the gradual discontinuation of the feature.

On July 31, 2024, the chat feature will be removed from the Google Business Profile. You will no longer receive new chat messages. Customers can still find and contact your business through Google Search and Google Maps.

Google advises adding a phone number to business profiles or booking with Google as an alternative. It’s important to note that “business messages” differ from “business RCS messages.” Google is expected to enhance the richer RCS messaging experience. For example, when chatting with an airline, you can check in and get your boarding pass using the Google Messages app.
