Google Play Store Introduces New Search Tab in Bottom Bar

Table of content

After testing in December, Google is now moving the Play Store search to the bottom bar with a new tab.

Instead of the search bar at the top of the screen when viewing “Games” and “Apps” feeds, Google Play now presents the “Search” tab in the middle of the bottom bar.

When you open the new tab, the search bar appears at the top as before, which is somewhat redundant and doesn’t do much for accessibility.

You’ll get a grid of search terms like “You Might Like” and “Explore Games.” The latter group is accompanied by icons, while the former group only has a magnifying glass icon.

Visually, it’s not a very engaging page, and the text feels a bit heavy. At the same time, making search a two-click/two-step process seems unnecessary.

With this change, the apps and games bar in the bottom bar will display the Play logo in the top left corner, while the notification bell and your profile picture remain. Meanwhile, the new “Search” tab is specifically for app queries.

This is rolling out with version 40.1.19-31 of the Play Store via a server-side update and is not widely available yet, but it appears that Google is sticking with this design.
