Last year, we learned about an upcoming feature related to unlocking an Android phone using your smartwatch.

However, the so-called Watch Unlock feature is still just a rumor, and now we may know why.

According to 9to5Google, Google is preparing to launch the feature with the Google Pixel Watch 3, which in turn will provide UWB connectivity. This could allow for faster and more secure phone unlocking without the need for fingerprint readers or face unlock.

Google Pixel Watch 3 May Utilize UWB Technology for More Secure Phone Unlock

The feature appears to be hidden within the source code of the Play Services app, indicating “UWB range” for watch unlocking.

However, the code also reveals that the feature may not work as intended in countries where UWB is not an officially supported communication protocol.

Nevertheless, this leak strongly suggests that Google is working on a more advanced method of watch unlocking than initially thought, and the UWB chip inside the Pixel Watch 3 will make this possible.
