As the first anniversary of the Search Generated Experience (SGE) experiment approaches, Google is reportedly considering making it a paid feature, but they are not contemplating offering ad-free search.

Since the announcement of the latest input/output and the initial rollout in late May, the SGE feature has been available through Search Labs, which recently received a comprehensive visual overhaul.

Users have been able to subscribe and test the AI-powered experiment.

Google recently tested making it available to those not in the preview program, but the Financial Times reported that the company “is exploring options including adding specific AI-supported search features to premium subscription services.”

This subscription would be in the form of Google One AI Premium at $19.99, which provides access to Gemini Advanced. The reason for this is that SGE results are more computationally intensive.

There will be no change in Google’s current search offering for anyone else, while SGE will continue to display ads.

Google told the Financial Times that they “are not working on or considering” an ad-free search experience.

Google executives said they “have not yet made a final decision on whether it will be launched or when it will be launched,” and they may only release certain parts of SGE to users for free.
