Google May Make Quick Share on Android Faster with QR Codes

The Quick Share feature on Android, previously known as Nearby Share, is a quick way to share files and more between devices, but it is not always perfect.

In an apparent move to streamline the feature further, it looks like Google is adding support for QR codes in Quick Share on Android.

The way Quick Share works today is by using Bluetooth technology to discover nearby “targets.” This can include Android devices, Chromebooks, and other Windows devices equipped with the Quick Share app.

Although this usually works well, it is not perfect. Sometimes, the device you want to send something to doesn’t show up. To fix this, it seems that Google is adding QR codes to Quick Share.

The folks at Android Authority have enabled a new option in the Quick Share experience that allows you to “share using a QR code.”

The new option, not yet available in current Quick Share updates, generates a code that can be scanned using another device. This does not share the file remotely with the code; instead, it appears to be used to connect the two devices.

The generated code seems to use a near. by URL which, for now, only redirects to a Google support page when scanned.

Notably, Samsung has already supported QR codes in Quick Share for a long time before integrating with Nearby Share.

While this may not ultimately become the primary means of connection for most people, it seems like a good option when “normal” means of connection fail. In theory, it could be faster in many cases.

As for when this might be rolled out publicly, it is still unclear.
