The second developer preview of Android 15 introduced native support for satellite messaging, and it seems Google is working on a custom user interface for the upcoming Pixel 9 series.

Egyptian developer @Nail_Sadykov shared a glimpse of how the system works. Similar to Apple’s application, you’ll need to orient the phone towards the satellite using a user interface to assist with aiming.

This starts in full-screen mode, but you can shrink it to see other apps as well. The goal is to keep the satellite icon within the circle to ensure a good connection.

You’ll need to step outside first to get a clear view of the sky as buildings, mountains, and even trees can obstruct signals.

The app will prompt you with some questions designed to give emergency services a clear picture of the issue that occurred and how they can assist.

It seems similar to Apple’s system, where this will only be used in emergencies, and the feature is called “Emergency SOS.” It will also require carrier support (not to mention being used outside of network coverage).

T-Mobile is mentioned as the carrier, but Google Fi is an MVNO on the T-Mobile network, so we hope Google will support the new feature on its carrier network.
