Google is Working on a Version of ChromeOS for Pixel Phones

According to a new report, Google has demonstrated the potential for a Pixel phone to run ChromeOS on an external display.

Google has long maintained that ChromeOS and Android should exist as separate entities, but this hasn’t stopped many from wanting to connect an Android phone to a display and start using ChromeOS.

After all, the lightweight operating system runs on devices with much less power than modern smartphones. As it turns out, Google seems to agree.

As reported by Android Authority, Google recently held a private event where the company showcased a Pixel 8 running ChromeOS on an external display.

It’s unclear why Google did this, as the event did not mention any plans to make this feature widely available. Instead, it seemed to be about providing “smartphone manufacturers the tools” to run both Android and ChromeOS from the same device.

Among these tools is the Android Virtualization Framework (AVF), introduced in Android 13. Although not its primary purpose, AVF technically allows Android devices to run a virtual machine of another operating system.

This special version of the Chromium operating system has “official support” for running via AVF. The project appears to be called “Fuchsia.”
