Google Drive may soon allow you to add more useful categories to your files on Android

Last year, Google introduced a feature that provided a new way for Google Drive users to organize and easily find their files later based on specific pre-set filters.

However, despite being useful, this feature was also very limited, as it was only available on the iOS system and had very few filtering criteria.

But it seems that is about to change soon, as Google Drive is now testing broader search categories in its Android app.

Google is expanding file organization options within Google Drive using the new “Categories” feature, as discovered by @AsembleDebug from SP Android while exploring Google Drive app code.

Unlike the current “Labels” feature, which is currently limited to Workspace administrators, “Categories” promise broader usability and better ways to keep Drive organized. This is also the case with the iOS app, which is limited to pre-defined categories.

The “Categories” feature allows you to assign files to one or more of 12 predefined categories, such as:

  • Automotive
  • Banking
  • Expenses
  • Home
  • IDs
  • Insurance
  • Medical
  • Pets
  • School
  • Taxes
  • Travel
  • Work
Google Drive may soon allow you to add more useful categories to your files on Android

You can categorize files by clicking on the three-dot menu next to the file and selecting “Manage Categories.” This makes it easy to label important documents using appropriate tags.

What’s exciting is that you can apply more than one category to the same file. For example, you can categorize a PDF copy of an invoice as both “Expenses” and “Travel,” which can improve file discovery when needed. Imagine having all your invoices, expenses, and banking data neatly organized in one place, accessible directly from the Drive home screen.

Most importantly, this is not limited to Workspace users only, meaning anyone with a Google account will be able to benefit from it.
