Google Cast Replaces Built-in Chromecast

Google Cast Replaces Built-in Chromecast

At the 2024 I/O conference, the “Built-in Chromecast” branding was changed to “Google Cast.” It’s worth noting that this reflects a branding change made in 2016.

At the end of 2016, the original “Google Cast” branding was gradually phased out in favour of “Built-in Chromecast.” Given consumer awareness of affordable Chromecast dongles, this change made sense.

The name was still in use in January this year when LG announced at CES that its 2024 webOS TVs would receive support for Built-in Chromecast (and Google Home).

During the announcement, Google said, “Today, we’re excited to announce that LG TVs in 2024 will now come with Built-in Chromecast. This means LG TV users can start a video on their phones or Chrome browser, and with just one tap on the Cast icon, they can start watching on the best screen in their home.”

The Pixel Tablet device also carries this branding, which has a built-in speaker base. The company announced Cast support for Android Automotive at the I/O conference and stated that Google Cast (formerly Built-in Chromecast) is coming to cars.

The updated branding is referenced on Android.com (with chromecast.com/built-in redirecting to that page).
