Google Can Now Turn Text on Websites into Ads

Google AdSense has introduced a new format for websites that converts the text on the site into a Google search shortcut, available starting today for website owners. Dubbed “Adaptive Ad Formats,” Google AdSense places “ad targets” in the text on a webpage that can trigger Google search links.

This new format, which doesn’t require third-party cookie files to display relevant ads, overlays search results on the page you’re viewing when you click the link.

Footnotes at the bottom of the page can also serve the same function by using the text on the page to find related content to display to users from the search.

Google also noted that links and install prompts in this new ad target format do not exclude each other.

Sites can choose to display one or the other, but the company says they “work better together.”

Google also requests that site owners refrain from enhancing signals to specific products on the page as a way to increase ad intent impressions (a tip many sites will surely ignore). It’s worth noting that both formats also work across mobile and desktop platforms.

Google, through multiple support pages detailing this new ad format, explains that these overlay boxes display “several related ads” based on the page’s content.

However, it’s not directly clear whether all ads displayed from the search are attributed to the publisher.

Regarding ad target links specifically, Google says it will automatically determine the number of links displayed, saying it “maintains a good user experience” by determining the number of links based on the page’s word count.

This new ad format is available today for AdSense publishers and is opt-in.
