It’s only been a few months since Apple launched its new mixed reality glasses, the Vision Pro. Rumors suggest that Apple is internally testing a new Apple Pencil that works with these glasses.

This could potentially allow users to draw directly within Vision Pro apps like Freeform and Pixelmator. The new pencil might enable direct drawing within Vision Pro apps.

Details on how VisionOS, the operating system for Vision Pro, integrates Apple Pencil support remain unclear. However, there’s an intriguing possibility involving using the pencil to draw on real-world surfaces like desktops and displaying those drawings in real-time within the virtual space of Vision Pro, complete with pressure sensitivity and tilt.

This would essentially transform your surroundings into a giant canvas for creative expression. While reports indicate that the new Apple Pencil might be unveiled alongside updates to the upcoming iPad Pro and iPad Air in April, there’s no confirmation yet on its compatibility with VisionOS.

Compatibility also hinges on software updates, and it’s uncertain which release will introduce this feature. The first beta of VisionOS 1.2 might be available to developers this week, with an announcement expected for VisionOS 2 at WWDC in June.

It’s important to note, as with many ongoing Apple projects, that even if this Apple Pencil supporting VisionOS passes internal testing, there’s no guarantee for the final release.

However, the possibility of drawing in the air using the Apple Pencil is undoubtedly intriguing, and future developments are worth keeping an eye on.
