The upcoming mobile phone operating system from Google, Android 15, might introduce satellite communication features for text messaging.

Evidence of this feature was discovered in the latest beta release of Android 14 by “Mishaal Rahman” from Android Authority.

In the latest beta release of Android 14, Google introduced a new page titled “Satellite Messaging.” According to this page, users with eligible mobile accounts may soon be able to “send and receive text messages via satellite.” There is a button for users to subscribe to this feature once it becomes available.

Android 15 Update Might Bring Satellite Messaging Feature

While the beta page doesn’t specify any telecom companies, clicking on the “Learn More” button leads to a T-Mobile page. This suggests that T-Mobile may be involved in providing this feature in Android 15.

T-Mobile has previously collaborated with SpaceX to improve communication in cellular dead zones using satellites. SpaceX has also launched its “Direct to Call” satellites capable of handling all LTE phones. Therefore, Google’s upcoming satellite messaging service may benefit from this technology.

This feature appears to serve regular communications and emergency situations. However, there may be delays in message delivery and limited coverage in certain areas, as mentioned on the Google page. Weather and physical obstacles may also affect signal quality.

Google is also working on a “Satellite SOS” feature, possibly in partnership with Garmin Response, a support center for aiding users in challenging emergency situations. This feature will be dedicated to emergency use and may also support text messaging.

While these details have not been officially confirmed yet, Google is indeed working on satellite communication for Android phones.

Satellite communication could significantly enhance communication options for Android users, especially those frequently finding themselves in areas with poor cellular reception.
