With the release of Android 13 QPR2 last year, Google removed the fixed taskbar from Pixel devices. Now, Android 15 DP2 reintroduces an option to show the taskbar once again.

Android 12L introduced the taskbar back in March 2022 to enhance multitasking and facilitate quick split-screen functionality. Android 13 QPR2 introduced the “Transient” redesign that made the navigation element temporary, taking up no space for apps.

Earlier this month, 14 QPR2 added search to the app grid accessible from the taskbar in a disc format.

To activate it, you need to swipe up to access the taskbar, then long-press, target the new divider between the grid and pinned apps, and toggle on “Show Taskbar Always.”

Afterward, you’ll have a persistent taskbar that appears when an app is open. Small details show the taskbar slightly curved upwards on the left and right.

When Google introduced the persistent taskbar in 13 QPR2, other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for Android tablets and foldable devices did not follow suit.

This is great for multitasking and quickly navigating between apps. Overall, it’s a good option to have for Pixel Fold owners and tablet users.
