Google I/O introduced a new version of Android TV based on Android 14. Similar to the new Wear OS 5 (also based on Android 14), there is a focus on reducing power consumption.

However, the most exciting feature for users is the support for Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode.

This feature enables a form of multitasking by allowing one application to run in full screen while another operates in a small window. This will enable several use cases:

  • Live Scores: Displaying live sports scores or stock indicators.
  • Smart Home: Showing connected doorbells or baby monitors.
  • Communication: Making video or voice calls while watching TV.
  • Health: Tracking fitness or monitoring health.

Google notes that PiP will be available on “eligible Android 14 TV versions,” so it’s unclear whether all TVs will support the new mode. Also, you cannot use two media apps simultaneously.

Android 14 for TV promises improved performance and startup times (up to 4 seconds faster in some cases). Devices with lower memory should also see a performance boost.

The new OS version also reduces power consumption. A low-power mode will disable network connectivity when the TV is not in use.

An increased power mode will keep the network active and enable Google Home functions.
