Amazon’s Alexa to Introduce Monthly Subscription Fees with Prime Membership

Amazon is set to revamp Alexa, but accessing more advanced features may come at a cost. Reports suggest monthly subscription fees ranging from $5 to $10, in addition to a Prime membership, to unlock AI-powered Alexa.

This revamped assistant is expected to launch in August 2024 with numerous enhancements. The frequent use of the phrase “Alexa” might become a thing of the past.

It is rumored that the new version will handle and complete multiple requests at once, such as composing emails and ordering takeout simultaneously. It will also learn user habits and customize routine actions, like brewing coffee when the alarm goes off.

Advanced shopping tips are also expected from Alexa. However, Amazon is not completely abandoning the free tier. The basic version of Alexa with new generative AI features will remain available.

This move seems to be a response to an increasingly competitive AI assistant market, with Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and even Apple’s enhanced Siri vying for user attention. The future of Alexa appears dual-pronged: a free basic service and a premium tier with advanced capabilities.
